In a phrase made popular in a 1970’s TV show, “Welcome Back”. After an absence of about a year and a half, CISC is pleased to reintroduce Advantage Steel in its new format.

While much has transpired during the intervening 18 months, steel remains an exciting material for construction, right down to the humble bus shelter. In this issue Design Award winning projects from across Canada are recognized for their merits in creative use of structural steel.

In the article “Rebirth of Steel”, first published in “Award Magazine”, many outstanding uses of steel are described. It seemed fitting to give this article national exposure in this, the rebirth of Advantage Steel.

How many ways can one design a simple bus shelter? Well, as the judges of the Steel Structures Education Foundation’s (SSEF) first annual competition for students of architecture discovered, there are at least 20 very different approaches – all using structural steel.

Whatever the need, structural steel can be exciting in demonstrating flexibility of form and economy of construction.
