Steel is a material whose ease of recycling has made it a structural material of choice for the Mountain Equipment Coop Stores.

The Montreal store was the first retail building in Quebec to meet Natural Resource Canada's C2000 standard for above-average energy and environmental performance. MEC’s new Montreal store was the most energy efficient retail building in Quebec as of its dated of completion. It will require at least 50 percent less energy to operate than a conventional store, and less energy was used in its construction. The latter – “embodied energy” – includes all the energy required to make and transport the building’s materials.

Nearness of material is an important part of the green design and construction process. The metal roofing was obtained from the Vicwest steel plant, located in Victoriaville, Quebec.
